Angolan university professors decided today to interrupt the strike, which lasts from January 3 until next October, “at the request of the Catholic bishops, who recognize the reason of the professors and recommend the Government to solve the problem”.
The measure was announced today by the secretary general of the Angolan National Union of Higher Education Teachers (Sinpes), Eduardo Peres Alberto, noting that the teachers “heeded the appeals of the Catholic Church and the respective bishops”.
Catholic leaders “recognise the teachers’ reason and recommend the Government to solve the problem, but they appeal to the social situation of the majority of students in public higher education institutions”, many “belonging to poor families”, the leader told Lusa today. union.
The strike “indefinitely” by Angolan university professors began on January 3rd and had already registered a first interruption of one month on April 5th. The new outage starts today and ends on October 24th.
According to Eduardo Peres Alberto, the teachers responded to the appeal of the Catholic bishops because they admit that the students “are being harmed” with the interruption of classes.
“We are from Angolan society, we are citizens and this appeal from the (Catholic) church is fundamental and because we also recognize that students are not to blame”, he argued.
“This is yet another exercise in good faith, on the side of the union, so that they do not say that there is a political advantage and we also expect common sense on the part of the authorities”, concluded the leader of Sinpes.
A salary increase, better working conditions, payment of the public debt and elections of the governing bodies of public higher education institutions are some of the demands of Angolan university professors.
A 6% salary increase was proposed by the Angolan President, João Lourenço, to teachers, which, however, was rejected at the general assembly, where they approved a salary proposal of 2.6 million kwanzas (5.2 thousand euros) for the full professor and 1.5 million kwanzas (3 thousand euros) for the trainee assistant professor.
The next academic year 2022/2022 in Angola is scheduled to start in October.
