The strike of Angolan university professors was suspended today until February 2023, when the strike will resume if there is no response to the demands, the union said.
According to the secretary general of the National Union of Higher Education Teachers (Sinpes), Eduardo Peres Alberto, the workers’ assembly approved the return to classes, which had been paralyzed since last October 24, with 47 votes in favor and 13 against.
Eduardo Peres Alberto referred, in statements to the Lusa agency, that the workers’ deliberation will be taken to the employer, as well as to the National Assembly and the Angolan President.
“We are encouraged by the fundamentals presented by the teachers, who know their mission well, and we hope that the Government will resolve this time”, said the secretary general of Sinpes, stressing that the teachers are not apologists for the strike.
The secretary general of Sinpes stated that, contrary to what is stated, the union does not only defend salary improvement, but also decent infrastructure, funds for research and continuous training.
“A decent salary is essential to dignify the life of the teacher, everything will depend on the good will of the holder of the executive power, but we will put a vote of confidence in the President of the Republic”, he stressed.
The trade unionist stressed that as of today “the strike is interpolated, teachers will be in the classrooms as of Thursday”.
“But since we have the General State Budget to be approved only this month and will go into effect in January, we have scheduled a negotiation round in the first fortnight, so, as it was decided, if the Government does not resolve this this time, we will on the 27th. February 2023, we will resume the strike indefinitely,” he said.
In the negotiations between the parties, during the strike, there was a promise to be attended to two of the four breaches of the claim book, namely funds for scientific research and continuous training of teachers.
Regarding the points on salaries and health allowance, the answer to these two complaints is pending, and must be submitted to the holder of the executive power.
