A 51-year-old citizen was arrested over the weekend in the city of Lubango, by the Criminal Investigation Service of Huíla, through the Department for Combating Financial Crimes for allegedly having stolen an ATM card and two million kwanzas.
The arrest took place in the Tchavola neighborhood, on the outskirts of the city of Lubango, on suspicion of the crime of use and abuse of a debit card. The fact, according to a note from SIC Huila, today, Monday, occurred when an elderly man went to an ATM to make a move, asking for help from the accused.
In a continuous act, the note reads, after having access to the code, he changed the aforementioned card and ran away, having then made a transfer of two million kwanzas to two different accounts and bought armchairs, plasma TV, stereo, washing machine, table, stove, wall mirror and a motorbike.
SIC reported that the investigation carried out, the goods purchased, all seized, and the withdrawals made accumulated losses of two million kwanzas, in an account that had to be captivated, as there were more than four million in it.
This was the 36th case of fraud by exchanging debit cards that the Police have registered, this year, in Huíla, whose losses exceed 200 million kwanzas.
The cases have elderly people and citizens with difficulties operating ATMs as victims, who rely on strangers, ending up being scammed .
