Engineer António Venâncio, who recently expressed his intention to run for the position of President of the MPLA, at the VIII Congress held by his party in December, denounced at a press conference held this Friday morning. , November 5th, in Luanda, there will be a campaign within the MPLA, against its possible competition against João Lourenço, who is leading the comrades of this 2017.
The militant of the party that has governed Angola since 1975, said that when he made a public demonstration to run for the MPLA leadership he had “encouraging contacts, but he soon slowed down the collection rhythms when they began to appear, all over the place. , messages and speeches from party leaders at the most diverse levels to discourage militants from joining any other operation to collect signatures for a second candidacy” for the party leadership.
To clarify, António Venâncio cites the fact that the MPLA’s Rangel district committee, where he is an active militant, organized a march to “make another candidacy almost impossible”. He also referred that all Party Action committees were mobilized to massively participate in the campaign, which will have been directed from above.
In view of these situations, the pre-candidate said, a climate of intimidation was unleashed in statements by party leaders in relation to the adoption of the single candidacy.
He also denounced interferences that he says are registered in the process, with delegates from several provinces refusing to subscribe to his candidacy, which, according to what he made known, allege the possibility of being held responsible for “partisan indiscipline, by supporting another candidacy.
“The idea of a single candidacy, which also spread to almost all provinces, and which was the reason for mandatory resolutions by all militants, was intended and approved in provincial, municipal and CAP assemblies, making the situation even more unbalanced, for the privileged treatment in perfect violation of the statutes, designation in point 1. paragraph d) of article 27”, he referred.
He added that his MPLA held, at CAP 90, in the urban district of Rangel, where he is a member, meetings aimed at discouraging the members of that committee to prepare a march to counter and demand the withdrawal of militants who have shown interest in joining his application.
These situations, continues António Venâncio, created an “inappropriate climate for the exercise of democracy and the free and conscious expression of militants throughout the national territory.
The engineer also informed that last Thursday, November 4, he sent the candidacy subcommittee to the party congress, a complaint and request for an extension of the deadline for the candidacy, which ended on Friday, 05th, and wait for a placement.
“According to this position, we will know later what steps to take, but we recommend, in the meantime, to all delegates in the various provinces that they continue their work until the process of collecting signatures is definitively concluded”, he guaranteed.
Regarding the intimidation that supporters of his candidacy say they are suffering, the pre-candidate for the MPLA’s elective congress considers “a great injustice” against his comrades.
“It is, because these countless militants and several citizens interested in this immaterial good, so precious, for the harmonious functioning of the party that is internal democracy, that I will fight to the last consequences for the achievement of our rights”, he promised, supporting himself in the Constitution of the Republic of Angola, which enshrines equal opportunities for all.
António Venâncio, 62 years old, 46 of whom as a member of the MPLA, is the first in the political history of that party to publicly express interest in running for the presidency of its political formation and, if effective, it will also be the first time that a Congress of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola will have more than one candidacy.
For the formalization of his candidacy, the pre-candidate said that he had elaborated a strategy motion that contains the political principles and ideas, as well as the mandate program, in compliance with the internal democracy, which, according to what he made known, the party’s statutes guarantee.
